One-of-a-Kind Road Trip
There are few things more quintessentially North American than a cross country road trip. From the days of horse-drawn wagons to the 21st century, people have always loved to explore the diverse terrain and glorious wilderness out west. The Chilko Experience’s remote vantage point in the Chilcotin Region of British Columbia means you’ll embark on different Canadian wilderness adventures every day. However, the fun can begin even before you arrive.
There are several different modes of transport you can take to get here, but the approximately 10-hour drive from Vancouver is the best option for those who want to engage with our beautiful province. So pack up the car and head north from Vancouver, stopping at these can’t-miss spots along the way.
Part One: Vancouver to Joffre Lakes
The beginning of this stretch takes you from Vancouver to Whistler. The gorgeous, coastal, Sea to Sky Highway—AKA Highway 99—hugs the eastern side of the Howe Sound. You’ll see glittering water to your left and towering mountains to your right. Take this route all the way to Shannon Falls, where you’ll find the most breathtaking rest stop in the world. The Sea to Sky Gondola, currently undergoing renovations, offers uniquely exciting viewing options.
Then, continue along your trip from Vancouver to Whistler, stopping once more when you reach Brandywine Falls. This provincial park features a 70-metre waterfall and plenty of hiking opportunities. It’s one of the best Canadian wilderness adventures!
The third stop on your trip from Vancouver to Joffre Lakes is Lillooet Lake. Its turquoise waters reflect the surrounding mountain peaks for idyllic, picturesque views. Just 20 minutes up the road is Joffre Lakes Provincial Park—the end of your Vancouver to Joffre Lake stretch. It’s a prime example of Canada’s famous glacial geography and British Columbia’s rugged outdoor paradise.
Part Two: Gold Country Canadian Wilderness Adventures
Once you pass through Joffre Lake, head over to Cache Creek for scenery straight out of an old Western film and home-made food to match. Be sure to get a view of the river before continuing your route to The Chilko Experience. The next stretch will take you through British Columbia’s Gold Country along Highway 97.
Chasm Ecological Reserve is another stop-worthy outdoor haven. The sun streams through the tree-filled canyon for a truly unique sight. Canyons in southern North America are often dry and rocky, but Chasm park is full of greenery and life.
100 Mile House is another convenient and enjoyable place to stop for a meal. And if you feel like stretching your legs after filling your stomach, head over to the Centennial Park and Bridge Creek Falls. It’s easy to get to and has a peaceful bench for you to rest and watch the waterfall.
Next, you’ll drive Highway 97 to Highway 20 to the famous Farwell Canyon Road, which will take you past Farwell Canyon, BC. Appreciate how the icy-blue Chilcotin River cuts through the mountainous British Columbia landscape.
The last stop on your road trip to our wilderness resort, BC, is Bull Canyon Provincial Park. It’s yet another spectacular opportunity to admire Canada’s final frontier: British Columbia. A rustic, wooden fence lines the river, which makes a delightful background for vacation photos.
